Beyond just exercising our First Amendment rights every week we also use that time to share info\, make connections\, learn and educate others\, collect and distribute food and local resources\, and show solidarity with groups who don’t feel safe coming out to protest. \nBy focusing on keeping our neighbors safe\, fed\, connected\, and informed\, we can build the foundation of care and resilience vital for sustained resistance and thriving as a community. DESCRIPTION:Join the KCEC Chapter of SOCM (Public School Strong) and 12 other local Knox County organizations\, led by the League of Women Voters of Knoxville/Knox County\, for a Rally on Monday\, June 1 at 4pm ahead of the 5pm Knox County Board of Education work session\, where they will discuss a resolution proposing to change the current process of book removals by Knox County Schools\, despite Superintendent Rysewyk’s statement following wide community pressure that Alex Haley’s “Roots” will be restored after initially being slated for removal by the local review committees. \nThere are still 123 banned books and an undemocratic\, non-transparent process for removals created after the 2024 state law was passed\, putting Tennessee third in the nation for book removals. Removing “Roots” was just the tipping point; there is no transparency about who is on these review committees\, who decides\, where and when they meet\, how long their terms are\, etc\, and the Board can decide to look into changing the process. The regular session (voting meeting) will be on Thursday\, June 4\, at 5 pm. Both meetings will take place in the Summer Place Board Room\, entrance on the corner of Wall & Walnut\, across from Market Square Garage. \nMore details available later this week via an email alert\, but Knox Countians from all 9 Districts are encouraged to email all Board members + Superintendent Rysewyk (superintendent@knoxschools.org)\, join the Rally and sign up to speak especially on Monday\, especially if you reside in those districts who have a Knox County Board of Education member or County Commissioner up for election – Districts 1\, 4\, 6\, 7\, and 9 for KCBOE and Districts 3\, 7 for County Commission. There are still only 2 dispatchers in the park-they are down almost 20 rangers in the park-normally around 30 rangers there are now only 11 and soon to be 10 A few seasonal rangers were hired-but no permanent due to this Administration stripping funds at every turn. Scientists\, maintenance\, trail crews\, ems all are on life support. This means increased unsafe conditions for visitors and wildlife and less dollars for surrounding communities. DESCRIPTION:Join the Anderson County Democratic Party for The Road to November: District 33 Democratic Primary Debate between Anne Backus and Kelly McCampbell. \nThis voter-focused debate will give Democratic primary voters and community members a chance to hear directly from the candidates running for Tennessee House District 33. Candidates will answer moderated questions about the issues facing Anderson County and Tennessee\, including public schools\, healthcare\, cost of living\, workers\, democracy\, state government\, and the future of our communities. \nThe debate will be held in Room 107 of the Goff Building on the Oak Ridge campus of Roane State Community College. \nDoors open at 5:30 PM. The debate begins at 6:00 PM. \nRSVP is required so we can plan for room capacity and headcount. \nAfter you RSVP\, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to submit a question for the candidates. To view a past commission monthly meetings go to https://www.andersoncounty.tv/.  \nAny person desiring to provide public comment at the county commission meeting may indicate his or her desire to speak during the Appearance of Citizens of the meeting as described below. \nThe Appearance of Citizens is a period in the meeting when Anderson County residents can speak to the County Commission about items or concerns on the agenda and not on the agenda.  Citizens are to state their name and address and will limit remarks to three minutes or less.  Under Tennessee Code Annotated 8-44-112 and Rules IV and V of the Anderson County Board of County Commissioners Rules of Procedure\, the County Commission may limit the number of speakers and require groups to select a spokesperson to represent their shared views. The County Commission will take all practicable steps to ensure all opposing viewpoints are fairly represented. Comments by citizens must be professional and respectful and must refrain from outbursts\, profanity\, questioning motives\, and personal attacks. Signs\, posters\, and placards may be carried outside the Commission meeting room\, but shall not be allowed within.
